SINGAPORE (JULY 21, 2011)

Hi guys,

After months of searching, Carol and I finally found jobs at Etonhouse International and Pre-school in Singapore.  Here are the links, if you are interested (see below).  Carol will be a kindergarten teacher, while I will be a class teacher.  I don't know which grade, yet (this is not ESL, but a normal primary homeroom teaching post).  We really wanted to stay in Ottawa, more than you'll ever know, but money is important.  It is really hard for me to work in Canada without a Bachelor of Education.  This degree is a requirement for getting certification in Canadian provinces and territories.   The plan is to either earn a double major bachelor in geography and religion or  BA Edu. via distance learning (online) while we are in Singapore. The latter choice would be difficult, as most of the course are not offered online and requires a practicum component, but I am still searching.  If I go for the 1st choice, when we return to Ottawa in 2013, I'll go to the University of Ottawa full-time on campus for 8 months to earn the Bachelor of Education while Carol works.  As for Carol, she can't work in Canada right now until she gets her permanent resident status, which, according to who you speak to in the government, takes 6 weeks to 18 months.  We have not applied yet, because we are waiting for documents from Australia to arrive.  Carol will probably study a program on how to teach Chinese or earn a 2nd Masters in Education from the same university we went to in Australia (online) while in Singapore.  Moreover, instead of coming back to Canada and trying to get a job cold turkey, we'll have two years to look and be really ready for 2013.  Now you're probably thinking, oh no, 2 years without Michael and Carol, again.  Nope, think again!!  We'll have several months of paid vacation, so you'll be seeing us sooner than you think!! Xmas and Summers for sure.
I hope those in Montreal and elsewhere can come to Ottawa to see us off.  We'd love any send-off to include Grandma.  We are expected to be in Singapore on the 14th of August, which means leaving on or around the 12th of August.  That's really coming up soon.

TRAVELS FROM NORTH AMERICA BACK TO SINGAPORE We got to the Burlington airport bright and early.  The security was confused about the Epsom Salts I had in my carry on (it was too heavy for my checked baggage, as I had to take ten pounds out, or pay 50$).   They scanned it 4 times, did a drug and bomb search on it, along with my Kindle and toothbrush, LOL.  I eventually got them through. When I checked in at JFK, Emirates  gave me a window seat, so I changed the JFK-DUBAI portion to an aisle seat, but they could not help me with the Dubai-Spore portion. The people sitting next to me are going to be annoyed with a huge guy taking up 1 and a 1/2 seats, LOL.  I had reserved them in the aisle in Sept., but looks like I got bumped, again, as did Carol.  Next time, cheapie Charlie airlines, all the way!! I was able to use my Korean Air Skymiles on the flight, which is good, because they never expire.  I checked my bag at JFK...

CEBU PART 1

We finally made it to Oslob, Cebu, Philippines. After an excellent trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia to see Brian, Mylene, Jacob, Allysia, and Matt, I flew to Toronto on WestJet to meet Carol for our Philippines Airline flight to Manila.  She took the train from Montreal, after spending time with Erin, Glenn, Norah, Leah, Jim (Dad) and Diane. The flight was uneventful, but at least they had movies.  I got stuck in a middle seat again.  Not great for the old back, but I think it was worse for the lady sitting next me to me in the aisle, as I woke her up or asked her to get by at least seven or eight times, LOL. After getting to the domestic airport at Manila, my pillow went missing.  The cleaners and security helped us look for it. One security guard found it.  We thought it had been stolen, but it was under a chair... Our flight from Manila to Cebu was upgraded to Premium Economy, so we got more food & drinks, as well as priority to get off the plane first....
