A MICHELLE 2014

Hi, I asked my student, Michelle, why she was unable to do her homework.  She said: "I have a part-time job".  I was like, ugh, lousy excuse.  This is what she does.  Kind of a local celebrity and on her way to stardom.  If you delve further, you'll also notice that she is a Thai kick-boxer and MMA fighter.  She is tiny, like maybe 4'9 and 80 pounds, but is quite the prize fighter!! GARY'S ADVENTURES IN THAILAND 2011

Michael and Carol, Vacation is great but, you do understand, that I am still working.  I keep pretty much to the same work schedule as back in Sydney except there is a 4 hour difference between Sydney and Rayong – I must wake up at 4 a.m. to check my e-mails for any work that may have come in.  If nothing, I go back to sleep and re-check my computer again in an hour or so – continuing that process until I shower and go for a leisurely breakfast.  After breakfast I would return to my room and check for work again – if nothing, I would go and do something (reading, shopping etc) for say an hour or so, continuing in this manner until noon (4 p.m. in Sydney) at which time I stop work.  So, there is no pressure on me and I have lots of recreational time.  In any case, I only have a 4 day work week (Wednesdays is my day off) of which my clients are aware and accept, scheduling their work accordingly (this applies to whether I am working from Sydney, Thailand or wherev...

My first presentation shouldn't be that difficult,

My first presentation shouldn't be that difficult, after all, I have been making presentations everyday for my students.  Just that in this case, my students would be my peers.  Teaching English idioms and expressions through television was the topic I had to present, a topic I have been using and studying about since 2004.  Fast forward to the 2015 KOTESOL International Conference and I was ready to give my 80 minute workshop presentation.  To my delight, the room was packed full of eager learners.  I was glad to see some Korean faces in the audience, knowing full well that they were curious and willing to help their students with this nontraditional method of learning. My presentation went off without a hitch.  Many people left partway through my presentation to go to a different speaker.  When I was done speaking, the remaining faithful were first broken up into groups to act out a lesson as an ESL student.  I believed, through personal experie...

MOM IN KOREA?

Hi Mom,  We were discussing B4 about the best (and worst) times to come to Korea.  August is convenient, but VERY H.O.T. February is convenient, but C.OL.D.  June would be good weather wise, but I'm usually off to another country by then.  Then it dawned on me... OCTOBER: 1) The weather is still warm, but not too humid. 2) I'll have a week off for Korean Thanksgiving and a week off for mid-terms. 3) The two weeks that I do work are pretty much Tuesday-Friday from 9am-12pm, so I could be back home for lunch by 1pm!  That can give you and Jim some recovery time, as well as privacy, or you can go for a walk on the beach nearby for some daily exercise.  During the week(s) off, we could do some exploring around Jeju Island, another Island called Duk-Do, or the mainland of South Korea itself.  And afternoons while I am not working could be explorations of Busan or simply hanging out at home.  Think about it. Love Mike

OSLOB, CEBU, PHILIPPINES 2019

Hi,  We finally made it to Oslob, Cebu, Philippines. After an excellent trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia to see Brian, Mylene, Jacob, Allysia, and Matt, I flew to Toronto on WestJet to meet Carol for our Philippines Airline flight to Manila.  She took the train from Montreal, after spending time with Erin, Glenn, Norah, Leah, Jim (Dad) and Diane. The flight was uneventful, but at least they had movies.  I got stuck in a middle seat again.  Not great for the old back, but I think it was worse for the lady sitting next me to me in the aisle, as I woke her up or asked her to get by at least seven or eight times, LOL. After getting to the domestic airport at Manila, my pillow went missing.  The cleaners and security helped us look for it. One security guard found it.  We thought it had been stolen, but it was under a chair... Our flight from Manila to Cebu was upgraded to Premium Economy, so we got more food & drinks, as well as priority to get off the plane fi...

FLORIDA HURRICANE 2017

It's moving at 14 MPH, slow enough that it's estimated impact is changing.  At this point, not sure we will get the worst of it here.   Devastating winds up to 175 MPH are out there, but expect them to diminish to 140.  Our house is supposed to handle 135, a spec of all new houses built after 2012.  It may move farther toward the east coast than the west, be we are definitely going to get a storm here.   We got steel shutters installed on all our windows and doors completed at 330pm today!  Life's exciting in Florida, eh? Jim Hi, Will this storm affect you?  I heard it's gonna be a five, possibly even a six. Love Mike

Dear Mike and Carol. Thank you very much for this email. I also often think of Sharon and miss her very much. It is difficult for people who have not gone through a loss like this to understand how we feel. I love you guys. Dad  Dear Dad, This is very sweet.  We think of Sharon all the time, talk fondly of her always.   Carol still has a scarf, some sunglasses, and a pair of gloves that belonged to her, and when she wears them, she'll often ask me if I know who they belonged to, and I'll reply with a smile. Love Mike

BUSAN AUGUST TO OCTOBER 2017

Image
Hi Heather, Volkan and Carol, Wow, Maryland and Australia?  We thought you guys were done with housesitting, but I guess not!!  GOOD FOR YOU!  Traveling is a way of life; awesome! We returned to Busan in August, and my dad stayed with us for a month.  He loved it, meeting our friends and visiting our haunts, but was not fond of hot soup for meals, stairs and the heat (this August was much hotter than last year when you were here). Carol went back to work in August at the international school and I went back to the university in September.  Typical life then, until now... It's Chuseok (Thanksgiving) week, so we flew over to Jeju Island, where we met up with my old friend, Jung-Hee.  She is an artist, who I met in Busan, at Jazz Styles (C'est La Vie) Bar in Kwangali, near the Samik Beach Apartments.  We stayed in Jeju City for a few days, exploring Jung-Hee's favorite markets, boardwalks, forested arboretum...

A WEEKEND IN MONGOLIA 2015

Hi guys, How was your weekend?  What did you get up to? Carol went to her IELTS class, as she needs a score of 7 to get her Ontario Teaching License.  It's part of her application package. Wish her luck!!   (IELTS is an English test for people good at taking tests, but does not demonstrate true English abilities.  There are many ESL students who score high, but stutter when they speak or won't converse.) She also went out for breakfast at the Khan Deli, owned by a Jewish guy from Pittsburg.  & she went to Sunday Plaza to shop. I went to a vitamin store, Sky Dept Store, The Organic Club, a traditional market, and Good Price grocery store to buy mixed nuts, protein powder, vitamins, salsa, white corn chips,  milk curd, horse steaks, goats liver and a big cow's heart.   The horse was 3.25$ per kilo, while the liver was 0.75¢ per kilo and the heart was 4$ for 1.5 kilos.  Now you know why it was so hard to resist!!  I ...

BIKE (FROM JIM) 2017

Sounds like you just want a 'big' Harley.  I thought I liked the Roadking the best, but once I Road the Deluxe, I found it more comfortable for my arms and legs.  Suggest you ride 2 or 3 Glides & Softails an hour or so each, for a comparison to see what feels the best the best. Missing my bike! Jim Okay. I will try those out! Thanks. Mike

HELLO FROM KOREA 2017

Date: Fri, Jan 13, 2017, 5:19 PM Hi, Carol came back a week ago and went right back to work, but I finished.  Went hiking on Monday.  Went hiking again today.  Andy-Zimbabwe, Heather-Calgary and I had lunch at an all you can eat BBQ place for 10$.  Walked off the BBQ meat in the mountains.  So tonight, we've been invited to an all you can eat vegan place.  Gotta balance, I suppose.  Tomorrow, gonna check out the bird estuary, and Sunday, do Brunch at a friend's house with several of Carol's co-workers.  Would it be inappropriate if we brought rum cake without the cake?  It is for 11am, but it will be 5pm somewhere in the world.  We just Facetimed with ,my dad's  friend, Gary Ross, who is living in Sydney.  Unfortunately, he is in a palliative care facility, with cancer, so it was a bit of a heart-breaking conversation.  Gary, though, has lived a full life and has no regrets.  Please email me back with all the new...

MACAU 2015

After our family adventure in Taiwan, Dad went to Macau to meet Gary Ross, while Mom and Jim went back home.  Carol stayed in Taiwan for a few extra days to take care of Mom and Jim, as they left later than Dad.  I went back to Mongolia, via Seoul. DAD Hi All, Just a quick note to let you know I arrived in Macau safe and sound. This city makes Los Vegas look like Cote St. Luc. Just waiting for Gary to arrive around 3 PM. Will write more later.  Jim MIKE Hi Dad (& everyone), Glad that you made it safely.  Go see the famous church ruins in Macau and make sure to see the old European area for a coffee.  And make it over to Hong Kong for a day    trip.           Mom and Jim, enjoy your last few hours in Tainan with Carol and her family.  We are both very glad you came to Taiwan.  The first of many overseas adventures.  I am at the Tainan High Speed Rail Station.  Made it here via the local train with no issu...

SINGAPORE

JANUARY 2012 How's everything going at home?  I hope Grandma gets well soon.  Please read this for Grandma, Neil.  We really miss everyone back home. It was so nice to of been home for a month. We got back safe and sound after uneventful flights. First week back went by quickly. Walked for exercise until I bought a new bike. Biked 25KM once that 1st week. Rod and WATI from Bali came to visit, so we showed them Chinatown, all the cool buildings and the East Coast Park.  It was really nice hosting someone in our humble abode. Every morning, we have bagels and tofu or eggs. Nice way to start the day with a taste of home. Then for lunch, I limit myself to one helping of the meat dish, at dinner, I have tofu or fish soup, while Carol has pork soup. When not biking 50KM, we watch Friends, How I Met Your Mother and 2 and a Half Men.  I also look for new and cool APPS for the Apple stuff. For Chinese New Year, we have two days off next week, which I am going to use to w...
